Matthew 5:3 Blessed (happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous–with life-joy and satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the poor in spirit (the humble, who rate themselves insignificant), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!
I love this definition of what it means to be blessed: happy, envied, spiritually prosperous, joyful, satisfied in God’s favour and salvation, regardless of what is going on around me. I’m blessed when I’ve lost my job. I’m blessed when everything is lost. I’m blessed when I can’t pay the bills. I’m blessed when my health is deteriorating.
The key to such blessing is being poor in spirit. And by poor in spirit I don’t mean you should beat yourself up over every wrong thing you have done, or that you should hate yourself when you look in the mirror. Being poor in spirit means recognising that I have nothing to do with being blessed. I can’t work myself blessed, confess myself blessed, or act myself blessed. I am blessed because Jesus says so. His finished work on the cross has made me blessed. I can’t get more blessed and I can’t walk out of His blessing. No matter what happens, if I am fully reliant on God as my source and supply, I am blessed. That’s the kingdom for you!
