Authentic – Part Two

Romans‬ ‭8:9‬ ‭NLT‬ But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you.

Authentic is being true to one’s spirit. If you are born again, the spirit within is the spirit of God. So you are authentic when your words and actions line up with the spirit of God.

Many seem to believe authentic Christianity is exposing sin and personal struggles. But the spirit of God does not sin. Let me remind you of the type of fruit produced by those who live according to the spirit:

Galatians 5:22-25 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

You and I are authentic to the spirit within when we exhibit the fruit of the spirit. To exhibit any other fruit is inconsistent with God’s spirit and conforming to the spirit of the world.

Not long ago I was in a particularly trying situation. I work as a substitute teacher from time to time and a few days ago I taught challenging classes in terms of behaviour. As a result of that day my confidence was knocked, not just as a teacher, but in every area.

I was trying to convince God that it was okay for me to feel down and defeated and that He should pat me on the back and comfort my wounded soul.

Instead, He talked tough. There have been plenty of times when my husband used my own sermons against me, but now God?

1 John 4:4 But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

God gave me a wake up call and reminded me that wallowing in my own pity was not the spirit I had. The spirit I have within is greater than the spirit of the world and if I were to be authentic I had to get in line with His victorious spirit. Satan desired to keep me down and defeated but it was not the spirit I had.

People often discredit “name it and claim it” type Christians – those who are sick as a dog, yet say, “I’m healed and whole in Jesus’ name.”

“It’s not real,” belittle some.

I argue it is authentic because that is the spirit within. The spirit of God is whole and healed. The spirit of God is more than a conqueror. We are not of this world. We are born of the spirit. Honest, authentic living is when you are true to the Spirit of God.

You have a greater, super-powerful spirit inside you. Don’t conform any longer to the patterns of this world. Live authentic to the Spirit of God.

How can you live authentic to God’s spirit within, today?
